Scout's story might just be the most heartwarming tale you'll read today!
Dog Keeps Escaping Shelter And Running To A Nursing Home To Spend Time With Its Residents
Unlike other shelter dogs who wait patiently to be adopted, Scout took matters into his own paws.
He set out to find his own home, and he did it in the most charming way possible!
Scout, who lives at the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Michigan, decided that being just another resident there wasn't enough for him.
He had bigger plans! Every night, he'd quietly slip away and make his way to a nursing home located directly across the street.
This wasn't just a one-time adventure for Scout.
He repeatedly made his escape to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, almost as if he were pleading:
"This is my home, hoomans. Don't take me back anymore!"
The Cutest Escape Ever
Even though it was only across the street, getting into the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility wasn’t easy at all!
He had to climb over several fences, dash across a highway, and then slip through the automatic doors of the facility.
Interestingly, he always chose the dead of night for his adventures.
Once inside, he would immediately find a comfy leather couch in the lobby and just collapse on it.
Initially, the staff at the nursing home would ensure Scout was returned to the shelter.
But as he kept escaping and returning, they started to see that Scout seemed truly content and at peace at their facility.
Eventually, they embraced the inevitable and welcomed him as a permanent resident of the facility.
"When Scout continued to show up here, we thought maybe it was meant to be," mentioned Jennifer Martinek from MBMCF.
"We've welcomed him to be a part of our family. This is where he belongs. He chose us," added Stephanie Elsey, a clinical care coordinator.
An Unexpected Caregiver
While Scout was first welcomed simply as a new resident, he quickly became much more than that.
He evolved into the most compassionate, intuitive caregiver at the facility, winning over everyone’s heart in no time!
A resident of MBMCF remarked, "If you're upset about something, or everything's going wrong, he makes you feel better. Scout's very happy here."
Scout showed a remarkable affinity for residents dealing with terminal illnesses and dementia, naturally providing comfort to those who needed it most.
"We couldn't imagine our lives without him! He completes our Meadow Brook family," the MBMCF team expressed on their official Facebook page.
No one can pinpoint exactly why Scout is so drawn to caring for the elderly, or why he has such a deep connection with them.
All that is known about his past is that he came from a very abusive home.
But one thing is certain: Scout has a caregiver’s heart, and he truly has found his forever home with his new family!
