Sora, a Labrador-Pitbull mix, was surrendered to Valley Animal Center, a no-kill shelter in Fresno, California, nearly four years ago. She finally got adopted—but heartbreakingly, it didn’t last.
Dog Spent Over 900 Days in a Shelter, Got Adopted—Only to Be Returned in Less Than 24 Hours
For years, Sora patiently waited, watching as other dogs found loving homes while she remained behind kennel bars.
Recently, her luck seemed to change. A potential adopter showed interest, and for the first time in almost four years, Sora left the shelter, ready to start a new chapter.
But just 24 hours later, she was back.
Her dream of a forever home had been shattered in an instant.
Adopted After 900+ Days at the Shelter
Sora’s journey at Valley Animal Center began in July 2021 when her previous owner surrendered her, admitting that they couldn’t provide the care and training she needed.
"Sora is a sweet pup that has great energy. She is a perfect fit for any household with an active lifestyle. Sora is the dog you want to take on long walks or bike rides; trust us, she can keep up. Unfortunately, Sora has been in a kennel for almost 4 years," the shelter shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Despite her affectionate personality and boundless energy, Sora spent nearly four years being overlooked by adopters.
Then, one day, someone walked into the shelter asking about her. Everyone’s hearts soared, hoping that this was finally her chance to go home for good.
For a brief moment, Sora had hope. She wagged her tail, thinking she had finally found a family who would love her forever.
Unfortunately, that happiness was short-lived.
Less than 24 hours after bringing her home, the adopter called the shelter and said they wanted to return her.
Once again, Sora found herself back in the kennel, confused and heartbroken.
"Sora did not get enough time to decompress in her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly," Sim Kaur from Valley Animal Center explained to Newsweek.
It was devastating—for Sora, for the shelter staff, and for everyone rooting for her to finally find her happy ending.

Returned and Heartbroken
Despite everything, the shelter refuses to give up on Sora. They are hopeful that the right family is out there—one that will be patient, understanding, and committed to giving her the love she deserves.
A shelter, no matter how caring, can never replace the warmth of a real home.
Shelter staff work tirelessly to enrich the lives of the animals in their care, but a kennel is no substitute for a loving family.
Years of waiting have taken a toll on Sora. The stress of shelter life has caused her to develop anxiety, making it even harder for her to find the right match.
"According to our certified dog trainer, Mariah Prudhume, if she was able to get her into a loving home, her mental health would dramatically improve. With love and patience, she wouldn't be the reactive dog she is today, and she would finally become the happy and goofy dog she is meant to be," Valley Animal Center shared in an Instagram post.
She’s a loving, energetic dog who just needs a chance.
Sora is still searching for a forever home—one where she will never have to experience rejection again.
She does best in a home with no other pets and is great with humans, including children over five years old. She just needs an adopter who understands her needs and is willing to help her thrive.
Could you be the one to change Sora’s life?
