The incredible rescue of Dorothea, a senior dog found trapped in a canal, left Phoenix residents both shocked and amazed.
Passerby Spotted A Dog Clinging To A Shopping Cart In A Canal — What Happened Next Was Incredible
Stranded and exhausted, a 10-year-old Chi mix named Dorothea found herself trapped in a dangerous canal, perched on a shopping cart with no way out.
Terrified and drained of energy, she clung to the metal, hoping for a miracle.
That miracle came when a passerby noticed her distress and immediately called for help.
Without hesitation, the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society Field Team rushed to the scene to save her.
How Did She Get There?
A concerned passerby first noticed what appeared to be a floating "object" in the middle of the canal. But as they observed more closely, they saw it wasn’t an object at all.
It was a dog, perched precariously on a shopping cart, alone and in desperate need of help.
The sight of the senior pup struggling to hold on was heartbreaking. Wasting no time, the passerby called in the professionals.
Within moments, rescue teams from the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Fire Department arrived, ready to act.
Hunter Stribling, a medical technician with AHS, knew that every second counted. Given the unknown circumstances that led to Dorothea’s predicament, the team worked quickly and carefully to bring her to safety.
They used a ladder to reach her, but she was frozen with fear.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Dorothea’s rescue had a happy ending. As soon as she was safely brought to solid ground, the relief was evident in the faces of the entire rescue team.
"Miracles do happen! 🥹ðŸ™We are beyond grateful for the quick actions of our incredible Field Team and the Phoenix Fire Department who worked together to give this sweet pup a second chance at life," Arizona Humane Society shared in an emotional Instagram post.
The remarkable rescue spread quickly, with Dorothea’s story making headlines nationwide. Her ordeal shined a light on the dedicated work that AHS does to save and care for stray animals in distress.
A Sweet Surprise
Once safely out of harm’s way, Dorothea was taken to the Arizona Humane Society’s hospital for a full examination.
Aside from dehydration, an infestation of ticks, and the lingering smell of canal water, she had also suffered some fractured teeth. But overall, she was in better shape than expected.
In just a short time, Dorothea began settling into her temporary new home at AHS. Despite her age, she quickly charmed everyone with her sweet and affectionate nature.
As her treatment progressed, Dorothea showed just how much love she had to give.
"Throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS' groomer) Dorothea was found to be a sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans," AHS shared in a heartfelt post on their website.
But the best news was yet to come.
Just days after her story went public, the shelter received a special request—someone wanted to adopt Dorothea!
Her rescuers couldn’t have been happier. After all, it was clear to everyone who met her that she was a perfect companion, deserving of a loving home.
From now on, Dorothea will enjoy a life filled with love, comfort, and endless adventures.
Whether it’s rolling in the grass, going for daily walks, or snuggling up with her new family, she will never have to worry about being alone again.
She’s finally getting the happy ending she deserves.
Congratulations, Dorothea! Thanks to AHS, you’re starting a brand-new chapter full of love and safety!
