Anyone who has had the painful experience of losing a cherished pet understands just how heart-wrenching it can be.
Dog Owner Horrified To See Her Pet Up For Adoption After Being Informed He Would Be Euthanized
The bond between a dog and its human is incredibly strong and once broken, the sorrow felt by the owner is often indescribable.
This exact emotion was felt by one dog owner, who endured this overwhelming grief when she believed she had to say goodbye to her pet forever.
Kristie And Beau
Kristie Pereira's adventure started when she adopted Beau, a charming hound-mix puppy, from a shelter located in Northern Virginia.
She eagerly stepped into her new role as a devoted dog mom.
She spent every day actively engaging with Beau, enjoying lively playdates and snug naps.
However, a few months into their time together, she observed unsettling changes in Beau's behavior.
Worried, Pereira took him to a veterinarian for a check-up, where she was informed that Beau might have neurological issues.
The veterinarian prescribed some medications and suggested that if there was no improvement, Beau should be taken to the emergency room immediately.
Regrettably, Beau’s health did not improve, which led Pereira to take him to an ER in Montgomery County, Maryland, where she received the same grim prognosis.
The medical team suggested several costly and invasive tests, but they were not optimistic about these improving Beau's condition significantly.
Heartbroken, they recommended she consider euthanasia.
After much reflection and with a heavy heart, Pereira decided to proceed and took Beau to the Montgomery County Animal Services to be euthanized.
Shocking Discovery
The policy at the animal service center prevented owners from being present during the euthanasia process, so Pereira had to endure the agony of saying goodbye to Beau and entrusting him to the veterinarians.
She expressed her profound distress in an interview with Fox 32:
"I don't think that someone that just wanted to get rid of the dog would feel anywhere close to how I'm feeling about this and how I have felt about it. Like, none of it was easy."
Though the euthanasia request form indicated clearly that the owner requested a humane end, it also noted that if Montgomery County assessed the pet as treatable and adoptable, they reserved the right to treat and rehome the pet.
This is precisely what happened with Beau.
After a thorough assessment, the veterinarians diagnosed him with a liver condition rather than a terminal illness.
Consequently, they treated him and instead of euthanizing, they sent him back to his original shelter in Northern Virginia.
Pereira, unaware of these developments, mourned Beau as if he had passed away.
Then, unexpectedly, she came across a Facebook post about a puppy being put up for adoption — and it was Beau!
She was stunned and confused.
"An emotional rollercoaster, it's [been], to say the least… He was like my little baby," she recounted to the news channel.
Montgomery County Animal Services spoke with Fox 32 and clarified their policy: they do not notify the original owners when they decide against euthanizing an animal.
This only occurs if the owner contacts them shortly after making the decision to express any regrets.
Pereira remembered being advised by animal services that euthanasia would be the best option if a significant health issue was identified by the veterinarians.
This advice was given under the assumption that euthanasia would be the most suitable choice for her particular situation.
Meanwhile, the adoption organization expressed their deep understanding of Pereira's difficult emotions regarding her pet.
However, they also made it clear that they strictly do not return surrendered pets to their previous owners.
This policy was firmly adhered to in Pereira's distressing case, which prevented Beau from returning to her.
