This man found a local dog in a horrible state by the roadside

While driving his child to school, a man spotted Sugar Snap, the local dog, in a dire state. The poor pup was extremely undernourished and lying by the roadside, clearly in distress and seeking help from anyone passing by.

The man immediately stopped his vehicle, exited, and hurried to the dog. With great care, he picked up Sugar Snap and transported him to the nearest police station in Chicago, hoping they could provide assistance.

Fortunately, the officers at the station acted swiftly. They contacted the local animal shelter to inform them of Sugar Snap’s dire situation. Following the shelter's guidance, they transported the pup to Chicago Animal Care and Control for further care.

However, after the medical team assessed Sugar Snap, they concluded that the best course of action was to transfer him to Chicago Animal Rescue, known as One Tail at a Time.

Once at the rescue, the staff conducted a thorough examination of the dog, Sugar Snap

They discovered that the dog was unable to stand or walk on his own.

Nevertheless, when they offered him some delicious food, Sugar Snap’s spirits lifted noticeably—a clear indication that he still had a strong will to live.

The rescue team promptly began treatment for Sugar Snap, funded by the generous donors who support their mission. He received a transfusion that helped stabilize his vital signs and boost his energy levels.

One Tail at a Time updated their followers on Facebook, stating, “His vet team is adding new meds to his treatment plan and continues to do everything they can for him while keeping him comfortable. He’s in excellent hands.”

Despite a challenging night where his blood pressure and glucose levels fell, Sugar Snap’s condition improved significantly after receiving a blood transfusion and additional food.

The rescue provided another update, explaining, “Some of his values dropped on Sunday which was alarming, so his veterinary team came up with a plan that included an NG tube and blood transfusion.”

Gradually, Sugar Snap’s condition improved. The vet team decided to remove his feeding tube, hopeful that he would continue to gain weight on his own. And he did!

His determination to recover was evident as he not only regained weight but also began to walk. The staff, impressed by his progress, recognized that he was ready for a foster home.

They shared this exciting news on Facebook: “Today, after three weeks, Sugar Snap left the emergency hospital walking on his own. He will go to foster with one of the veterinarians who treated him, where he will continue to get healthy and strong.”

Sugar Snap grew happier every day

In his new foster home, Sugar Snap thrived. He grew happier every day, and his health improved remarkably, transforming him into the handsome dog he was meant to be.

“We’re celebrating two weeks in foster and happy to report he’s weighing in at nearly 34lbs, is more mobile than ever, and has even learned how to beg for food. Can you believe this is the same dog?!” the rescue proudly announced.

In just a month, Sugar Snap’s transformation was astonishing

He had doubled his weight from 19 lbs to an impressive 40 lbs! His foster mom, touched by his remarkable recovery and endearing personality, decided she couldn’t part with him. 

She adopted him, and he now enjoys a joyful life filled with love and furry siblings.

“Sugar now has a dog brother, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle. Not only is his mom a vet, but his dad too! We truly couldn’t have asked for a happier ending for this lucky Chicago stray,” One Tail at a Time concluded.
