Saying that final goodbye to a beloved pet, knowing you'll never see them again, is incredibly hard.

The thought of a pet crossing the rainbow bridge is something every dog owner dreads.

Honestly, I'm not sure which is scarier: the moment of the crossing itself or the nagging fear at the back of my mind, constantly reminding me that the moment is inevitable.

When Katie Schakols from Texas decided to adopt Rooster, she knew their time together would be limited from the start.

Rooster was an older dog, deep into his golden years and plagued with severe health issues.

You might wonder, why would a young woman adopt an old, ailing dog?

She did it to give him the beautiful final days he truly deserved.

It Was The Best Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times

Described as old, rejected, sick, and hopeless, Rooster—a 10- to 12-year-old chocolate Labrador—was found at Gulf Coast STARS shelter in Brazoria County, Texas.

Yet, despite all this, Rooster found love, care, and a new life, all thanks to Katie Schakols and her family.

"I fell so in love," Katie shared with PEOPLE magazine.

"He is just one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen, inside and out."

Katie looked beyond Rooster's many ailments: cataracts that left him blind in one eye, worn elbow pads, missing teeth from scraping concrete for food, and various lumps and heartworm.

"The bond I had with Rooster was unreal," Katie continued.

"I'd never felt that specific type of connection before, and it was clear to everyone that he had chosen me to be his person."

Their bond was immediate and deep. Knowing their time was limited, they made the most of every moment together.

Rooster was welcomed into a loving home, where he met Bailey, a younger dog in the family.

For the first time, Rooster experienced an abundance of love and care, overwhelming yet wonderful.

A dog who once dug through concrete for scraps was now enjoying real dog food and walking on grass as if it were a cloud.

Everything seemed perfect, almost too good to be true.

But, as with all good things, this too had to end.

Katie knew their time would be short.

However, the manner of Rooster's departure was a brutal shock to her.

On the 28th day of his new life, Rooster suffered from bloat—also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus—a sudden condition that many dogs fall victim to each year.

His stomach filled with air and twisted, causing him unbearable pain.

Sadly, it was too late for a surgery called gastropexy that could have prevented this, and the vet could do nothing to save him.

Due to hospital protocols, Katie couldn't be with him in his final moments.

They took him to another room where he passed away peacefully, seeing the rainbow one last time.

"She whispered in my ear that she'd always love me and is so sorry she couldn't save me," Rooster 'said' in a video Katie posted on TikTok.

Oh, Katie, I hope you realize you truly did save Rooster.

Though brief, your time together gave him a life's worth of love and happiness.

You showed him the joy of having a home and feeling loved.

Life is fleeting, and we never know when it will end.

That's why we need to make the most of it.
