11 Common Reasons Why Chihuahuas Might Sound Like They're Choking On Something

By maks in Health Published On 12th October 2024

Why does my Chihuahua sound like he’s choking when he clearly isn’t? Could he be in real danger? These are common concerns that come up when our beloved pets start acting out of the ordinary.

Let’s dive into some of the most frequent causes for why your Chihuahua may sound like it’s choking, even if they’re not.

Why Does My Chihuahua Sound Like He’s Choking?

First off, it’s important to know that there are actually more than 11 reasons why a Chihuahua might have choking episodes.

We’ll go through the most common causes, and remember, it’s always a good idea to take your dog to the vet if you’re seeing this behavior.

While it could be something as minor as a little sneeze or cough, it might also be something more serious like a respiratory issue or even a form of cancer.

1. The Dangers Of Foreign Object Ingestion

Chihuahuas might be small, but they sure have a big appetite and personality.

Sometimes, rather than snacking on food, these dogs might get into things like socks, underwear, shoelaces, or even small broken toy parts—basically, any non-food object that shouldn’t be consumed. These items can easily get stuck in their digestive system.

When these objects are lodged in their throat or esophagus, that’s when the gagging or choking sounds occur. It’s a very unpleasant situation for them.

If you’ve never heard a Chihuahua choking on something, consider yourself lucky, because it’s an unsettling sound—like the dog is struggling to breathe and gasping for air.

Foreign object ingestion poses a serious risk to tiny Chihuahuas, so it’s crucial to act quickly to prevent any further complications.

2. The Infamous Reverse Sneeze

Many pet owners get alarmed when they hear reverse sneezing. It’s actually more frequent in small breeds, though any dog can experience it.

The reason for this is that small dogs like Chihuahuas have narrow nasal passages and short snouts, which can lead to irritation or inflammation that causes reverse sneezing. This happens quickly, making it seem as though they can’t stop sneezing.

When reverse sneezing occurs, your Chihuahua will suck in air rapidly—almost like a vacuum—rather than exhaling as in a typical sneeze.

Although reverse sneezing can be uncomfortable to watch, it’s usually harmless and only lasts for a short while.

There are even some simple home remedies you can try, but it’s always smart to check in with your vet to rule out anything more serious.

3. Allergies: Sneezing, Sniffling, Coughing Culprit

Chihuahuas, no matter their age or gender, can suffer from allergies just like humans.

When these allergies affect their respiratory system, it can lead to symptoms like coughing or even choking sounds. This might be due to conditions such as allergic pneumonitis or chronic bronchitis, both of which make breathing difficult for your dog.

Common allergens include things like dust, mold, pet dander, or even certain household cleaners.

If you think your Chihuahua’s choking sounds are linked to allergies, it’s worth having your vet run some tests to identify the exact triggers.

4. Chihuahua Heat Stroke

Don’t be fooled into thinking that only big dogs are at risk of heatstroke—Chihuahuas and other small breeds can be affected too!

Heatstroke happens when your dog gets too hot and begins to pant heavily.

This can sound like choking, and may also be accompanied by symptoms like a high fever, loss of appetite, or excessive drooling.

It’s also worth remembering that Chihuahuas have short snouts, making it tougher for them to regulate their body temperature.

This is especially true for overweight Chihuahuas, as excess fat can make heat regulation even harder.

5. Tracheal Troubles

Issues with the trachea are a common reason why your Chihuahua might sound like it’s choking.

One of the most frequent problems is a collapsing trachea. This happens when the tracheal rings (cartilage) weaken, causing breathing difficulties for your dog.

This condition can be very uncomfortable for your Chihuahua, leading to symptoms like coughing, weight loss, or even changes in behavior due to the discomfort.

Ignoring this condition could lead to more severe health problems, so it’s best to see your vet promptly.

In some cases, surgery may be the only solution to fix a collapsing trachea.

6. Laryngeal Paralysis

Another serious condition that can make your Chihuahua sound like he’s choking is laryngeal paralysis, which weakens or paralyzes the muscles in the larynx (voice box).

This condition typically affects older Chihuahuas, though no one is exactly sure why it happens.

If your dog starts showing symptoms, it’s important to take them to the vet for a thorough check-up to determine the cause and how best to manage it.

7. Kennel Cough

Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is an upper respiratory infection that is highly contagious.

One telltale sign of kennel cough is the distinctive “honking” sound, which might make your Chihuahua seem like he’s choking, but it’s more like the sound of a goose honking!

Luckily, kennel cough is generally less severe than other infections and can often be treated with a round of antibiotics.

So, make sure to take your goose.. I mean, Chihuahua, to the vet!

8. Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease

There are a number of respiratory illnesses that can affect your Chihuahua, causing symptoms like a stuffy nose, watery eyes, and coughing that sounds a lot like choking.

These illnesses can cause irritation in the throat and airways, making it hard for your dog to breathe properly.

Your Chihuahua might even become a bit grumpy with you, simply because he’s frustrated and uncomfortable from the irritation.

Luckily, with the right treatment, these symptoms usually go away!

Always consult your vet to get the right advice for your pet’s specific condition.

9. Lung Problems

There are quite a few lung-related issues that can affect Chihuahuas, including infections, parasites, lung cancer, or even trauma.

No matter what the lung issue is, it can cause loud, choking-like noises that are pretty alarming!

When the lungs aren’t working well, it becomes much harder for your dog to catch his breath, leading to these noises.

If left untreated, chronic lung problems can significantly reduce your Chihuahua’s lifespan.

10. Heart Problems

Heart issues can come in different forms, ranging from congestive heart failure and heartworm to heart disease and irregular heart rhythms.

These types of problems often cause symptoms that resemble choking, along with other signs like wheezing, restlessness, or a loss of appetite.

Your Chihuahua may also start licking you more than usual, which could be his way of showing he’s not feeling well.

In many cases, chronic heart issues are to blame, but it’s best to consult your vet to determine the exact cause of the problem.

11. Understanding the Risks of Throat Cancer

Throat cancer doesn’t discriminate by breed, and unfortunately, Chihuahuas can be affected by it too.

This condition can cause your dog to sound like he’s choking, as well as other symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and difficulty breathing. In addition, your dog may exhibit signs of lethargy, hair loss, and a loss of appetite as the disease weakens his immune system.

Detecting throat cancer in its early stages can be difficult, so regular vet check-ups are essential to catch any potential issues before they become serious.

Should I Be Worried If My Chihuahua Keeps Gagging?

Whether or not you should be concerned depends on how frequently your Chihuahua makes choking or gagging sounds and how quickly it happens.

If this is a behavior you don’t often see in healthy dogs, then it’s a good idea to take your Chihuahua to the vet. They can do some physical exams and diagnostic tests to figure out what’s going on. From there, your vet will likely provide a treatment plan and give you some expert advice on how to care for your pup.

Though it might not be anything serious, it’s always better to get it checked out just to be safe.

To Wrap It Up

From reverse sneezing to heart conditions, there are several reasons why a Chihuahua might sound like they’re choking.

These little dogs are incredible companions, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they’re well taken care of!

The good news is that with the right care and a bit of help from your vet, many of these common issues can be managed and treated effectively.
